Hindu Rope Plant (Hoya Carnosa Compacta)

Hoya Carnosa Compacta, also known as a Hindu Rope Plant, is a popular tropical vining plant native to Eastern Asia and Australia. This houseplant species is a flowering plant that is known for its unique and interesting "curly" leaf foliage.

We will cover all the important aspects of your Hindu Rope Plant care, including light, water, soil, temperature, humidity and more.

Hindu Rope Plant (Hoya Carnosa Compacta) Care Guide:

Light

Hindu Rope plants thrive in bright, indirect light. However, they can tolerate low light conditions. An east-facing window is a great spot, and a south or east-facing window is also good as long as the light isn't too direct. Prolonged direct sunlight can damage the plant by scorching the leaves.

Depending on where you live, you'll want to test out which window works best for your Hindu Rope indoors.

Watering Schedule

Watering is a critical aspect of Hindu Rope Plant care. These plants prefer to be kept evenly moist, but not waterlogged. To determine when to water, stick your finger (or moisture meter) into the soil and if the top two inches feel dry, it's time to water.

The best watering method is to soak the soil with lukewarm rainwater (if you have it), allowing the water to run out completely by tilting your pot and then replace the pot on a saucer once it has drained.

Soil Type

Hindu Rope houseplants prefer a well-draining soil mix that allows the roots to have good aeration. The soil for your plant should be rich in organic matter. You can create your own soil mix for your Hoya by combining equal parts peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark - or purchase a potting mix that is designed for Epiphytic plants. It's also important to make sure the pot you use has adequate drainage holes (not just one at the bottom), as a waterlogged plant will cause root rot.

Temperature & Humidity

Your Hindu Rope prefer warm temperatures, between 60°F and 85°F. They also prefer a relative humidity of 60-80%, so if the air in your home is dry, you can increase the humidity by misting the plant regularly, using a humidifier, grouping it with other plants and/or placing a pebble tray of water near the plant. It's important to know that positioning your plant beside a radiator or on a drafty windowsill should be avoided.

Pruning and Propagation

Pruning is not necessary for Hindu Rope Plants, but it can help encourage bushier growth and promote the development of new leaves. We would suggest pruning a couple days after watering with fertilizer to help promote the most amount of growth points possible.

To prune this plant, simply cut back the stems just above a node, being careful not to damage the plant. To propagate, you can take stem cuttings and root them in water, a well-draining soil mix or sphagnum moss that is wrapped up to keep moisture.
