Description
Pilea Peperomia (Chinese Money Plant)
Also known as Chinese Money plant, UFO Plant, Pancake Plant, Friendship Plant, Coin Plant or Missionary Plant, is a fast-growing succulent-like houseplant that's great for beginning plant owners.
Noted for its unique pad shape foliage, the Scottish botanist George Forrest was the first westerner to collect Pilea peperomioides, in 1906 and again in 1910.
Pilea Peperomioides Care Guide:
Light:
The Pilea Peperomioides thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Make sure to rotate your Peperomia regularly to keep it looking symmetrical. Avoid window locations that receive harsh, direct light as it will burn the delicate leaves.
While this plant can adapt to lower light conditions - it will become leggy, grow fewer offshoots, and the coin-shaped leaves will become smaller.
Temperature / Humidity:
The Chinese Money Plant works in average household temperatures and humidity. Avoid overly dry conditions by keeping the plant away from heating vents.
The Peperomia plant is hardy to freezing temperatures, but when kept indoors avoid exposing it to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
Watering:
This evergreen perennial needs to nearly dry out between waterings and then water thoroughly. The coin shaped leaves of Pilea Peperomioides will begin to droop when it dries out, which means that it’s time for watering.
Soil:
Pot your Pilea Peperomioides in rich, well-draining soil with a multi hole pot. A high-quality organic potting mix that is peat-based or coir-based is best for this plant. Add perlite to increase drainage and tilt your pot to ensure the soil does not become waterlogged.
Flowering:
The Chinese Money plant does not often flower when grown indoors. However when it does, it can produce small white flowers throughout the spring months.
Fertilization:
Use a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in the spring and summer months. Follow the instructions on your fertilizer's instructions.
