The Cactus Flagelliformis (Cleistocactus winteri subsp. colademononis), also known as the Golden Monkey Tail or Golden Hildewintera, is a sought-after trailing cactus admired for its cascading stems covered in dense, golden-yellow spines. Native to the arid mountain regions of Bolivia, this rare tropical cactus develops long, rope-like stems that can grow over 3 feet in length and create a dramatic hanging effect over time. Its distinctive texture comes from the soft, hair-like golden spines that give it a fuzzy appearance, making it look more like a creature than a cactus. In ideal conditions, it rewards growers with vibrant pink to reddish tubular blooms that emerge from the sides of its stems in late spring or summer. These flowers are pollinator-friendly and add a striking pop of color against the bright yellow fuzz. Though often confused with its relative, the Silver Monkey Tail (Cleistocactus colademononis), the Cactus Flagelliformis is a separate and highly coveted subspecies with a warmer hue and faster growth habit. It thrives in well-draining soil and is best displayed in a hanging planter where its stems can spill dramatically.
Care Guide:
This is an easy-care cactus. Give it bright, indirect light or morning sun with some protection in intense heat. Water thoroughly but only when the soil is completely dry. Use a cactus mix or sandy, well-draining substrate. Trace amounts of fertilizer with every watering will help support blooming and stem development.
