Hederaceum Micans (Philodendron Micans)

The Philodendron Micans plant which is more commonly known as the Velvet Leaf Philodendron due to its "velvet" leaves that appear to also be heart-shaped, is low maintenance and can tolerate all kinds of neglect. They're great indoor plants that look great in a hanging planter and can be trained to grow up on a moss pole.

Light:

This Philodendron Micans plant prefers medium to high indirect light such as a east or north-facing window. If put too close to a south-facing window it could burn the foliage. Make sure to test over a couple of days what works best for your indoor environment.

Temperature / Humidity:

Due to it's native tropical regions the Velvet Leaf Philodendron prefers room temperature and humid conditions, (65 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit) though it can tolerate temperatures no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Watering:

When watering your Hederaceum Micans the best water in order is distilled, rain, filtered and then tap water. Once about 2 inches of the top soil is dried out is when you will water your plant, by watering thoroughly and letting the excess drain out the bottom. When watering be careful to not overwater because leaves will wilt and your houseplant will get root rot.

Soil:

The best Philodendron Micans plant soil is a light, airy, peat-based potting mix so that water can drain thoroughly, but keep the soil consistently moist. If you let the soil dry out too much, the tips of the leaves on your Philodendron will curl and turn brown.

Flowering:

Velvet Leaf Philodendron plants do flower! Although it is hard to get them to bloom out of their natural habitat, it is not impossible. The plant must be mature before flowering which takes a long 15-16 years. After it has matured it will flower around May-July. 

Fertilization:

A good quality rich organic houseplant fertilizer will keep your Hederaceum Micans growing. Your philodendron can be fertilized once and month during the spring and summer and can benefit from some light fertilization, balanced with an all-purpose fertilizer during these seasons.
